I can still remember the first time that I worked in an office that had Herman Miller Aeron chairs behind the desks. I had never heard of them before, so I did not recognize it when I saw it. Having no particular sense of furniture design, I was not instantly impressed. And then, I sat in it.

I have still yet to sit in another office chair as comfortable as that one. And it continues to be comfortable after hours of sitting in it. You feel just as good getting up from your desk as you did when you first sat down. For people with back problems, they may even feel better after sitting in one of these chairs for a while.

This chair has been getting rave reviews since first being introduced fifteen years ago, in’94. It is at least as popular today as it was then. The chair even has a place in the the permanent collection of The Museum of Modern Art.

There are three different sizes of the chair available, which makes it much easier to find the right fit, particularly for people who are little taller, shorter or broader than average. Although there are reports that it is uncomfortable if the size is not correct, I have not found that to be the case personally. The chair can be adjusted in other ways as well, such as in armrest height, armrest angle, tilt tension, seat height, seat pan angle, lumbar height and lumbar depth. These all work together to help you get find the most comfortable position for you.

I no longer need to sit in front of a computer for hours. But as an acupuncturist and massage therapist, I make referrals for this chair all the time. When clients or patients come to be with back problems, it is this chair in particular that I always recommend.

Another factor that gets high marks is the mesh seat, which keeps you cool while it is supporting your body. Unlike cushions, this does not get lumpy or wear unevenly. Speaking of the material, the Aeron chair is 94% recyclable. But with its continued comfort as well as the twelve year warranty it comes with, it is likely to be a long time before you will need to worry about that.

Personally, I will always be more concerned about function rather than design when purchasing office furniture. But I certainly do not mind that the this is one chair that has looks that match its performance in quality. There are some critics who say that the design is tired but for me, it is a style that will remain timeless.

This chair is not cheap. And normally, I am not one to spend this kind of money on furniture. But this is the first and only piece that I am happy to spend the money on, because I know that the benefits I receive are worth it. Keeping my back in good shape and out of surgery is worth twice the price.
