Does Your Room Need A Change – Think Area Rugs

January 18, 2010 by Alvin Kruger

If you’re looking into redecorating your place, all you have to do is clean up a bit, dust off some stuff and buy some great looking area rugs! Decorating with area rugs is one of the best ways to change the look of your home without going bankrupt. Take a breather and consider these things before shopping for the perfect area rugs for your home sweet home.

Going out and spending for area rugs do entail some careful thinking. Of course, these decorating items are considered investments too. Before taking out that purse, decide first on your budget. Not because area rugs are way cheaper than new upholstery or cans of paint that you will splurge like there’s no tomorrow. Remember, times now are hard with the global economic crisis, so wise spending is necessary. Buying high quality rugs are well worth it despite their higher rates because they can last far longer than cheaper ones but with poor quality materials. Hence, you buy less, you spend less.

One important factor to consider aside from the price is the size. Allot some allowance of about three feet between the wall and the edge of the rug. If you’re using the rug as a furniture base, make sure that it can cover all areas well. For example, for a dining set, it should be able to hold not just the table but the chairs as well.

An ideal setting is to have the furnishings in the room fit on the rug, particularly if it’s a set furniture such as a dining set or a sofa set. If this is impossible given your limited space, then forgo the furniture set arrangement and just accessorize the rug on some other space. You can place it under a coffee table, a side table or even in front of the entrance.

When you measure your room for the new area rug, there are a couple of ways that can help you see what it might look. If you lay newspaper down, this will give you an idea of what size area rug you will need. You can also use masking tape to demarcate the area. Simply use a measuring tape afterwards to measure the tape.

Another essential factor for area rugs is the material. There are several to choose from. Wool is the most widely used. Cotton and silk are also popular choices. Bamboo is fast gaining recognition, particularly because of its sturdy quality. There are also synthetic materials that are cheaper yet durable. If you’re planning on placing an area rug in an often busy place, use materials that will stand the test of frequent feet visits. Otherwise, cotton is a good choice. I personally prefer cotton area rugs for my bathroom and kitchen. They can be easily washed and can dry just as fast.

Finally, choose which color and pattern is best in the room. For very dark rooms, lighter colors will lighten up the room. The same is true for a very light room. Try to pick a color that compliments the main color of the room. This does not mean that you cannot or should not add a breath of fresh air to a room with colors not usually seen together but it does need to complement each other and not clash. As far as patterns, a simple floral pattern will work in just about in anywhere, where a solid color or easy pattern will not.

Rest assured that when you buy area rugs for your house, you are getting your money’s worth, especially if you choose those that complement your rooms or spaces. Area rugs are simple decors but they do not fail to add appeal, character and vibrancy to your abode.

When decorating with rugs all the experts agree that it is essential to use quality area rugs. And as discussed here one of the most popular types is the round braided rugs.
