The carpet shampoo should be used according to the steamer’s instructions. If you are cleaning urine, do not use shampoo during the first cleaning. Steam cleaners have a spray function and a vacuum function. The vacuum function runs constantly while the spray function can be turned on and off. Go over the same area of carpet twice, one with the spray function on and then once with it off to remove most of the water from the carpet (if you are doing urine removal, you will first have to vacuum out the vinegar and peroxide solution before doing the spray and vacuum routine). You are done when a hand placed on the carpet does not come away with droplets. The carpet should only be slightly damp and feels “wrung out.”

The carpets need to dry overnight before anyone can walk on them again. Urine removal requires a second cleaning the next day, this time with the shampoo. Then another night of drying is needed. Once dry, baking soda should be sprinkled on the carpet to draw up any residual urine. The baking soda can we vacuumed up using your regular sweeper.
